Bio

Sandra L. Portal-Andreu is a Miami native of Cuban/Colombian descent who began her dance experience at the Mirochnik Ballet Institute under the direction of Madelyn Alfonso. Later, she trained intensively in the Vaganova Technique with Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev. Under Issaev’s direction with the Arts Ballet Theater of South Florida, she performed as soloist in The Nutcracker, Le Corsaire, Ballet Concerto, and Suite of Waltzes No.1. She received an A.A. from New World School of the Arts, a B.F.A. in Dance from Florida State University, and a M.S. in Movement Sciences from Barry University. In 2012, she received the Professional Development Grant from New World School of the Arts to attend the summer intensive at the Workcentre of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera, Italy. In addition, she has trained with Fernando Bujones, Suzanne Farrell, Michael Foley, Gerri Houlihan, and Roxane D’Orleans-Juste of the Jose Limon Company. Her professional performance experience includes: Arts Ballet Theatre of South Florida, Josée Garant Dance, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, Camposition, and TOC Project.

Ms. Portal-Andreu independently creates and presents work throughout the community with her project-based group: Betta Dance Theater. Her unique style of mixing dance with dialogue addresses current issues that dive into women’s identities and roles. She has created original work for CityTheatre Miami’s Summer Shorts Festival, Gabo Pulido’s “Deep Surface: An Homage to the Sea”, “T.M.I. (too much information)” for Sarasota Contemporary Dance Company. Her choreography has been described as “striking”, “smart”, “chilling”, and “having a knack for the theatrical”. Her cinedance, “Labyrinth” in collaboration with filmmaker, Claudio Marcotulli, was acquired by PBS of South Florida for the Film-Makers Project which highlights film created and produced in Miami-Dade County. She has received support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade Public Library System, NWSA Professional Development Program, MicroTheater Miami, Miami Light Project’s Here & Now 2016, and GrassStains.

Among her dance experience, Portal-Andreu has worked in numerous Film /TV and Commercial projects which include “Marilyn in Miami” by Agatino Zurria,  “Dancer” by Dara Friedman (currently at the Perez Art Museum Miami), Carlos Ponce’s “Todo lo que Soy”, Iron and Wine’s “Lion’s Mane”, Super Bowl XXX Pregame Show featuring KISS and Cher and Sabado Gigante. She has appeared in local, regional, and national commercials and print which include Cheerios, Walmart and Intel Computers.

Since 2003, Ms. Portal-Andreu has been an adjunct faculty member of the Theatre Division at the New World School of the Arts where she concentrates on Movement for Theatre with a focus on GYROKINESIS(r) and Grotowski. Sandra has also taught at the Miami City Ballet School, Barry University, University of Miami, Vladimir Issaev’s Classical Ballet Russian Seminar and FSUdanceSARASOTA.  From 2015-2017, she was Prevention Coordinator/Co-director for the youth-driven, bilingual performance group: UnaVoz Troupe. Recently, she was named Miami Programs Manager for ProjectArt, an organization that transforms public libraries into vital cultural hubs by offering youth year-round visual art classes and providing studio spaces for emerging visual artists.

Sandra deeply thanks her family and friends for their continuous love and support. She credits her husband, Juan and two sons, Julian and Gabriel, who encourage and inspire her to continue moving and creating.
